| A Reader's Response To The Whole "Mature"/"M-17" Thing | 3/2/02 |

Viper, Having looked up your site for my quest in finding GS codes for the Sega Saturn, I happened upon your "rant" link and decided to click and read. I tell you what, you must be my long lost brother of sorts. I can honestly say I agree 100+% with you on everything you said. And I'll tell you why. I am 28. I grew up in the 80's amongst Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm St. and Hellraiser movies. Now also bear in mind I didn't have the guidence I should've had as a kid. My mother was a psycho and my dad was one of those "fathers who had a steelmill father, who was also an alcoholic" But I taught myself right from wrong. Meaning that to dress up like Jason Voorhees was just common sense and puzzle boxes from Hellraiser just didn't exist. Kinda like wrestlers. People think the character they play on Raw is how they are off the set. But besides that, people are too anal about everything anymore. I work at a Toy's R Us and I'm around kids on daylight when I work, stock shelves at night mostly. I have seen this M-17 thing go un-noticed I don't know how many times. 9 times out of 10 it's the PARENTS who buy the game for the kid. Not because it's what Johnny wants, it's because N64 Pokemon Stadium 2 is $65 and N64 Resident Evil is $9.99. Less money for Mom to spend. Follow me yet? We are living in a society anymore where certain people have to target on SOMETHING that is making their kids do bad shit. But of course, they can't blame themselves. No, no! Especially when you are a Yuppie, like 98% of the people in this area I work at are. This mostly stems back to the era when Ice-T, AKA The Man of Rap, was the target of the whole "Cop Killer" thing. I went to see him at Lollapolooza 1991 and he was great. Not cops got shot, no riots. Reason he was targeted? Quayle and Bush needed something to bitch about and base their campaign on. I just don't get it sometimes. I really don't like someone telling me I can't buy a game or a toy. After 22 years of playing videogames, I haven't evolved into a gun toting blast everything in my way Doom hero, my all time fav game. Great stress reliever, by the way. But I know NOT to repeat what is in the game. Duh! Most gamers and I share the same take on the whole censorship thing. Though they aren't as active about it, they've expressed their thoughts all too much lately to me about it. In closing, I just wish the world would stop, take a look around and realize that games don't make kids insane to the point of murdering. It's the upbringing in the home that does. | |
